The John Monash Scholarship enables talented Australians to pursue a masters or PhD at any world-class university outside of Australia, with no restrictions on field of study or institution. The scholarships recognise excellence and leadership, and celebrate one of Australia’s finest leaders: General Sir John Monash.
Each year the scholarships are awarded to outstanding Australian graduates to enable them to study for a master's or doctoral degree at the world’s best universities. Successful applicants have shown excellence in their field, demonstrated leadership skills, and have a vision for how they can contribute to a better Australia.
The awards support any postgraduate degree, however, the applicant must be able to argue the merits of the chosen course and institution. The John Monash Scholarships are not limited by age, gender, academic field of study or choice of overseas university.

What it covers
John Monash Scholarship valued at AUD $100,000 per year for a maximum of three years.
Funds can be used flexibly to cover:
- tuition fees
- accommodation
- other living expenses
You will also receive a one off travel allowance to assist with flights from Australia to your country of study.
Who can apply
To be eligible to apply for a John Monash Scholarship applicants must:
- Be an Australian citizen;
- Have completed or be about to complete an undergraduate degree from an Australian University; and
- Be planning to undertake postgraduate study at an overseas university commencing in the calendar year following the year of application and selection
- Commence studies within 12 months of being awarded the Scholarship.
The scholarships support any postgraduate degree, however, the applicant must be able to demonstrate the merits of the chosen course and institution.

John Monash Scholars demonstrate academic excellence, outstanding leadership potential, and have strong vision to build Australia's capabilities for the future, based on the qualities modelled by General Sir John Monash.
To be successful, applicants must demonstrate:
- Academic Excellence: This may be evidences by outstanding academic results, prizes, awards, publications, performances, exhibitions, enterprises and professional endeavours, There is no minimum GPA required, however applicants must show evidence of their academic ability and capacity to manage the academic rigour of the chosen postgraduate degree.
- Outstanding leadership potential: This may be demonstrated in an academic environment, professional environment and / or involvement with community
- A strong vision to build Australia's capabilities for the future: This may be demonstrated through explaining career goals and how this will benefit Australia, and why the chosen University and degree programme are the best fit to help achieve these goals.
How to apply
To apply, candidates will need to submit the following documents:
- Professional resume
- Official transcripts from Undergraduate degree(s) at an Australian university, complete or incomplete
- Three letters of recommendation from academic, professional or personal referees who are the most senior people who can speak to your excellence and leadership capabilities. It is recommended that you select the most appropriate combination of referees based on your career stage
- A budget plan showing how you will manage your finances abroad
Ensure that all application components (including references) are submitted on time. Late applications cannot be accepted.
The deadline for applications each year (usually late June) is for studying in the following calendar year (October intake).
